Paver sealer that has turned white is a major problem in the Tampa area. Paver sealing often gets less respect than it deserves and is often done by painters, pressure washing companies, handy man, pool companies, paver installation companies, landscapers, etc. You get the picture. It is not as easy as it seems or is presented by the DIY box stores.
Pavers turning white are caused by a few main reasons. Paver sealer turns white primarily because it is not the correct product for the application. Paver sealer is exposed to extreme amounts of moisture and water. Whether it is from the pool or sprinklers or rain, the sealer has to work with moisture and not fight against it.
Paver sealer needs to breathe to allow moisture to get out of the pavers. When moisture does not come out of the paver area in a sufficient amount of time, then bad things happen. Paver sealer then delaminates from the paver surface causing moisture to be trapped underneath the sealer and on top of the paver. At this point, there is no other way to fix it other than to remove or strip the paver sealer from the surface. A very time consuming and expensive process.
The paver sealer has to be physically removed from the surface for the white looking pavers to return to normal. Once it is removed, then the pavers are ready to be prepped to seal, resanded, and resealed properly.
Take a look at the pictures below to see the progression of stripping, cleaning, sanding, and resealing. When done properly, the pavers are ready to be enjoyed again.
