Should we seal our granite countertops?
We hear that question on regular basis either via phone, email, or while we are in a client’s home performing other hard surface cleaning and sealing services.
Granite is a beautiful and expensive stone. Its need to be taken care of and a little effort should be put forth to preserve it and beautify it once in while. Granite is typically sealed at installation except for new home building. Regardless of whether someone tells you that your granite countertop has been sealed or not, you should test it yourself.
To test your granite, get three items – eye dropper, olive oil, and water. You can take the water and put it in different areas on the stone to see if it darkens. The olive oil can be dropped using the eye dropper in a corner or out of view area to test for porosity.
If it either one of the items darkens the stone, then it needs sealing.
